Superintendent Danny Adkins announces the new gymnasium at Betsy Layne High School will be named the Junior Newsome Arena on Monday, December 10, 2018.

Adkins comments, “Our Floyd County team is happy to see the new gymnasium at Betsy Layne High School open for the students and it seems only fitting that the gym be named after Coach Newsome. Junior coached basketball for twenty-four years with all but one of those being at Betsy Layne High School. He had 502 wins, averaging more than 20 wins per season for those 24 years, showing the strength and consistency of his basketball program.”

Adkins talks about the success of Coach Newsome’s teams over the years saying, “Coach Newsome’s teams won twelve 58th district championship titles, two 15th region championship titles and three 15th region runners-up titles. His teams played in twenty regional tournaments while he was coach.” As for performance in other tournaments, Adkins says, “Junior led his team to three All A regional championships, an appearance in the All A Final Four and coached the Bobcats to win the 2011 All A Classic State Championship. With this record, it’s understandable why Coach Newsome was named Floyd County Conference Coach of the Year ten times, 15th Region Coach of the Year twice and was inducted into the Kentucky Association of Basketball Court of Honor in 2012.”

Adkins concluded saying, “We invite everyone to join us Monday evening for a brief ceremony that will take place after the junior varsity game that starts at 6:00. The Bobcats are taking on Pike Central. We want to extend a special invitation to the assistant coaches who worked with Junior over the years and all his former players.”

William Newsome, Jr. is married to Josephine “Jo” Kidd Newsome and is the father of two sons, Dwight and Duran. Newsome currently serves as a member of the Floyd County Board of Education. He and his wife reside in Stanville, Kentucky.

*In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be rescheduled for later in the week.
