Each day students and staff at BLES recite the BOBCAT PLEDGE.  Part of this pledge is to “Be a Solution”.  While the Bobcats do this in many different ways throughout the year, today they visited Pikeville Nursing Home and Rehab to deliver each resident a Christmas gift. This tradition began five years ago, when the staff decided to adopt the nursing home residents instead of exchanging gifts.

The annual project begins with Mrs. Rhonda Keathley, the school’s secretary. She organizes the event each year and says it is one of the highlights of the holiday season for her.  To ensure that each resident has a gift he/she wants, Mrs. Keathley gets a list of clothing sizes and a special gift request for each resident.  Next, the Bobcat staff members draw names.  Determining which group of the awesome BLES students were chosen to deliver the gifts was a challenge but eventually administrators decided to choose the grade level that has the highest average attendance for the month of November. The students deliver the gifts to the nursing home, sing songs and stop at Gatti’s.  Each year, more parents are joining the tradition with the students and staff.

“This is one of the most educational field trips of the school year,” explained John A. Kidd, BLES Principal.  “My son has had the opportunity to go on this field trip two times, this year and when he was in 3rd grade.  He says he loves giving the residents their gifts and seeing their faces.  The experience itself is an unforgettable lesson for our youth.  It’s a blessing for both groups, the young and the old.”

The residents at the nursing home are pleased to get the gifts, but they are even more excited to see the students. On this day during the holiday season, the residents once again have kids around a tree, singing Christmas songs and giving out gifts.

Way to Be a Solution Bobcats!
