VISION
The Floyd County School Nutrition Department will provide safe nutritious healthy meals in order to promote the health and educational achievement of our students.
 
MISSION
The Floyd County School Nutrition Department will provide a highly trained staff to prepare a student friendly menu that will provide healthy nutritionally balanced meal options for the students of Floyd County.  Meals will be prepared to meet both state and federal guidelines in a clean sanitary environment to help promote the health and educational achievement of our students.  
 
Our district, through federally assisted meal programs, provides quality nutritionally balanced, free meals to students each school day. Children who are hungry find it hard to stay alert and participate in their classroom experiences. So we help close the "readiness" gap with a good breakfast before classes begin. We also plan school lunches that provide one-third of the recommended dietary allowances for school-age children. Menus include a daily variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, low-fat milk, and whole-grain products. Also, we have made changes in food specifications and preparation to lower fat, sodium and sugar content.
Healthy eating 

Healthy eating helps children grow, develop and do well in school. It prevents childhood and adolescent problems such as obesity and iron-deficiency anemia. It also lowers the risk of future chronic disease such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer, and it reduces potential health-care costs.

Try to follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans as recommended by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services.

  • Try to maintain a healthy weight.

  • Be physically active each day.

    Build a healthy base

  • Let the "MyPlate" model guide your choices.

  • Choose a variety of grains daily, especially whole grains.

  • Select a variety of fruits and vegetables daily.

  • Keep food safe to eat.

    Choose sensibly

  • Choose a diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol and moderate in total fat.

  • Opt for beverages and foods to moderate your intake of sugars.

  • Select and prepare foods with less salt.

 Good nutrition and learning go hand in hand.

The School Nutrition department is made up of a team of food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to students' health, well being and their ability to learn. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices.

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.
